From Mr. Martin

Dear OVE Families,

Thank you so much for your continued involvement and partnership in your child’s education. We are pleased to share that we connected with 97% of our families during fall parent-teacher conferences! We appreciate the time you took to meet with your child’s teacher and discuss their progress, growth, and learning goals. At Orchard View Elementary, we believe that strong partnerships between home and school are essential to student success. We look forward to continuing to work together to support your child’s academic growth, personal development, and overall success throughout the school year.

We are also working hard to improve daily attendance at OVE. Our goal is for every student to maintain an attendance rate above 94%, which equates to approximately 10 or fewer absences during the school year, regardless of the reason. We understand that illnesses and unexpected circumstances arise, but regular attendance is essential for academic growth and success. Whenever possible, please schedule vacations and appointments on days when school is not in session. If your child is not feeling well in the morning but is well enough to attend, we encourage you to send them to school. Our school nurse can assess students who begin feeling worse during the day. Even attending for part of the day helps students stay connected to learning and keep pace with classmates. While we will always support students who miss school, missed instructional time can never be fully replaced. Being on time is just as important as being present. Arriving on time allows students to begin their day with confidence, follow familiar routines, connect with classmates and teachers, and feel emotionally regulated and ready to learn.

Major events for the month of November include our PTO Book Fair, November 9th–13th, with a special parent/guardian shopping opportunity alongside students on Monday, November 9th, from 2:20–4:30 p.m. We will also honor our veterans with a special picture wall, so be on the lookout for a flyer coming home with your student! Junior Achievement Day will take place on November 23th, when students will learn how families work together to earn money and make choices between needs and wants. On November 24th, we will welcome grandparents and special visitors for our third-grade Grandparents/VIP Day and end the day with our traditional OVE Balloon Parade to kick off Thanksgiving break. Thanksgiving break runs November 25th–29th. We hope all our OVE families enjoy a wonderful and restful break!

Thank you for your continued support and involvement. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me directly via email or phone.

From Mrs. Palmer

Counselor's Corner:

Students continue to learn in class how we strive to make OVE a Bully-Free School. As we work to better understand how to Recognize, Report, and Refuse bullying behaviors, students learned that they can apply the 5 Safety Rules and also be Upstanders who help friends in need by supporting them, helping them report to a safe adult, or reporting themselves. We are working hard to remember that bullying is repeated behavior that is mean on purpose, hurts our hearts or bodies, or can even include actions that result in social isolation. The imbalance of power creates a feeling of helplessness for the target or victim.  Older students are learning that there are many instances where bullying behavior occurs "behind" a screen. This is a growing concern and warrants conversations both at school and home.

A glimmer of positivity was shared with both second and third graders that sends a powerful message:

A recent study showed that when an upstander intervenes, in over 50% of cases where bullying is occurring, the behavior will stop within 10 seconds. WOW!!  We hope to empower children to be Upstanders! It's one more way our Eagles can fly!
