From Mr. Martin

Dear OVE Families,
Our K–2 students recently completed the fall NWEA assessments. These assessments provide us with important insights into student learning and help us adjust instruction to better meet the needs of all our students. NWEA results will be sent home on Thursday, October 1st.

Be on the lookout for our schoolwide Beanstack Reading Challenge, which will run throughout the entirety of the month! Students will keep track of minutes they read and those who reach the final goal of 500 minutes will receive a locker magnet to display. We are excited to see how many minutes our OVE Eagles can read!

If you have not done so already, please sign up through ParentSquare for a fall conference with your child's teacher. Our goal is to conference with 100% of our families, and these conversations are a valuable opportunity to celebrate student progress, discuss areas for growth, and strengthen our school-home partnership.

Also, be on the lookout for information about our online OVE School Spirit Wear store opening soon! This will be a great opportunity to purchase OVE apparel and show your Eagle pride.

Later this month, our third-grade students will participate in the ILEARN Math Checkpoint on October 15th and the ELA Checkpoint on October 20th. If you have a third-grade student, please do your best to ensure they are present on both days. These checkpoints provide teachers with valuable information about student progress toward the Indiana Academic Standards and help us identify areas where students may need additional instruction or support. Unlike the end-of-year ILEARN assessment, which measures overall mastery of the standards, checkpoint results allow teachers to use the data throughout the school year to adjust instruction and provide targeted interventions.

Finally, I am super excited about the Aeroponic Tower Garden that will soon make its appearance in our library area! This fun learning opportunity will allow our students to see firsthand how plants grow without traditional soil and will provide opportunities to connect science, hands-on learning, and healthy living right here at OVE. I can't wait to see our students' reactions as they watch our garden grow!

As we sneak up on the 50th day of school on October 21st, it is incredible to think that we are already more than one-quarter of the way through the school year! Don't worry—we still have a lot of learning, growing, and fun ahead of us. Thank you for your continued support and involvement in your child's education and for all you do to support our school. We are grateful to have such wonderful families as part of the OVE community!

Mr. Martin, Principal

Beginning October 14, 2026, Middlebury Community Schools will begin using ParentSquare Attendance Plus to enhance our efforts to support student attendance. As a result, you may receive more frequent communications from us regarding your student’s attendance, including:
  • Celebration messages about attendance milestones and improvements
  • Check-ins when your student is absent more frequently
  • Digital attendance letters through ParentSquare when certain absence levels are reached, instead of paper letters sent by mail
You’ll receive these attendance-related communications the same way you receive other MCS updates and notifications through ParentSquare.
For more information about how to use ParentSquare for attendance, here are some helpful resources for your reference:
If you have questions about your student's attendance, please contact the OVE office at 574-825-5405.
Thank you for being our partner in supporting your student’s attendance!

From Mrs. Palmer

Throughout September, counseling lessons centered on our schoolwide SOAR initiative, with special emphasis on the "S" — self-control. Recognizing this as a significant challenge this year, we explored how different parts of the brain support self-regulation. Students learned about their emotional "zones" (or "motors") and discovered how the amygdala and prefrontal cortex work together to help us manage big feelings and impulses.

In October, state-mandated bullying prevention lessons will take place in all classrooms. We'll begin with the 5 Safety Rules, then help students distinguish bullying from conflict, practice reporting procedures, and learn strategies to refuse bullying behaviors. Students will also explore the role of bystanders and how each of us contributes to creating a bully-free school community.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please reach out through Parent Square or email me at palmerl@mcsin-k12.org

With snow and colder weather approaching, it would be a great idea to have your student keep an extra pair of pants and socks in their locker in case they get wet at recess. If your student has borrowed clothes from the clinic, please wash and return ASAP. 🙂
If you have any boys size 5-7 bottoms that you would like to donate to OVE, we would be happy to take them!

From Mrs. Raatz

Exciting things are happening in the OVE library! Each week a different book series is featured, and it's been great to see students step outside of their normal choices and check out a book they wouldn't usually select. October is National Book Month and our students are taking part in a month-long reading challenge.

Let's "leaf" through a good book this fall!
